University Admission Tests
TMUA, MAT, ENGAA
If you are applying to study Maths or Engineering at one of the top universities (including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, Durham etc,) you will need to sit their admissions test, usually in October (TMUA, ENGAA, MAT). Early preparation is crucial for these. I recommend starting in September at the very latest, and I offer weekly sessions with lots of resources to help you achieve your best in these challenging assessments.
Further / Additional
Maths GCSE
(All exam boards)/ Additional
Many schools enter their students for "Further Maths GCSE", sometimes called "Additional Maths", or another equivalent qualification. Sometimes lessons for this are added in to lunchtimes at school, so students are not given adequate time for this extra work. I can provide tutoring to support this.
International Baccalaureate
(IB SL or HL)
Whatever level you're working at you could be finding it difficult. If you're not confident you're getting the best out of lessons at school, or just need a bit more support to achieve the level. I can help you get there. We will look at the topics you need to improve, I'll help make sure you're organised for the exam, as well as give you tips for achieving the extra marks on the exam paper.
Maths A-level
(All exam boards)
The move from GCSE to A-Level can be a challenge. You may need a bit more support than your school or college can offer you, or you may need to improve your understanding of some topics. It could be that you didn't get on top of everything during the start of the A-Level course and you've just realised this now. Some students find they understand the topics in lessons, but can't manage the homework, or aren't getting the grade they want in the exams. I can help you with these, and give you advice on how best to get organised, and manage your time.
Further Maths A-Level
(All exam boards)
You may well be finding most of A-Level Maths fairly straightforward, but have some difficulties with some of the Further Maths content. It could be that you understand the content very well, but can't get the marks in the exam questions, or that you've found the step up from GCSE a bit of a surprise. I can help fill any gaps of understanding, and help you achieve all the marks you can on the papers.
EPQ
(Extended Project Qualification)
You may be just starting an EPQ, but you're not sure how to formulate your question. You could have an excellent question, but have reached a dead-end with your project, or just want to make sure you get the top grade. I have mentored over 20 students through EPQs, with many achieving A/A*, and none lower than a B grade.
Understanding
Everyone has different ways of understanding concepts in maths. I enjoy adapting my explanations to suit you, and students find that this approach helps their understanding, confidence and enjoyment.
Confidence
I find many students have had their confidence knocked, either for a specific topic, or for maths in general. This is a particular problem in maths where "there can only be one right answer". I find out the reasoning behind answers; because there will be a logic there, and in looking at this we can build confidence and understanding.
Organisation
Maths is a subject where there are very many topics, particularly at GCSE level. In order to progress and achieve students need to have an organised approach to be able to manage their time, and practice their skills before the exams, and achieve all the marks in the exams. At A-level I sometimes find that students haven't developed these skills because they've previously relied on their natural abilities.
